UNESCO Promotes Safe and Inclusive AI for Women in the Caribbean

Dated: March 19, 2026

Efforts are underway in the Caribbean to promote safer and more inclusive use of artificial intelligence, particularly for women and girls who face growing risks in digital spaces. Technology-facilitated gender-based violence, including harassment, impersonation, and image-based abuse, continues to disproportionately impact women, limiting their participation and safety online. The rapid expansion of generative AI technologies has introduced new challenges, such as the spread of deepfakes, misinformation, and biased systems that can reinforce existing inequalities.

In response, a regional initiative has focused on building awareness and strengthening the skills needed to navigate these risks while also harnessing the positive potential of AI. Through interactive discussions and practical learning sessions, participants explored both the opportunities and dangers associated with emerging technologies, gaining insights into ethical AI use, online safety, and privacy protection. The initiative brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government representatives, youth organizations, and community actors, fostering dialogue and shared understanding.

By equipping participants with knowledge and practical tools, this effort aims to empower individuals and communities to engage with AI responsibly and confidently. It also underscores the importance of ethical frameworks and inclusive approaches to ensure that technological advancements contribute to gender equality rather than deepen existing divides.
