Africa’s Public Data Infrastructure: Key to Unlocking the AI Future

Dated: November 18, 2025

Public data—from census information to administrative records—is crucial for addressing major challenges such as food security, climate change, and economic development. In Africa, where the population is young and rapidly growing, this data will be central to shaping an AI-enabled future. As the continent has previously leapfrogged technological barriers, it now has the opportunity to pioneer modern, AI-ready public data systems. To support this transition, Google is committing $2.25 million to help modernize Africa’s public data infrastructure and make it more accessible and trustworthy for the AI era.

This investment will rely on Data Commons, Google’s open knowledge repository that integrates public datasets into a unified and reliable resource. By mapping fragmented datasets onto the Data Commons knowledge graph, the initiative will allow organizations and governments to analyze information more efficiently using advanced AI tools. This approach aims to simplify access to essential data and make it easier to generate insights that support development.

Google.org is also providing funding to the UN Economic Commission for Africa to help establish a regional Data Commons specifically for the continent. This project will develop AI-enabled platforms to integrate datasets across areas such as food security, trade, and economic growth. It will also work toward setting regional standards for ethical data sharing and strengthening the capabilities of national statistical offices. The result will be an AI-ready data foundation that helps policymakers make more informed decisions and drive meaningful societal progress.

In addition, Google.org is supporting PARIS21 with funding to advance data and AI skills across national statistical systems in countries like Ghana, Rwanda, and Senegal. The project focuses on training statistical offices in AI, developing guidelines for data that can be easily interpreted by humans and AI, and providing hands-on assistance to expand open data infrastructure. These efforts aim to help governments use reliable data more effectively in sectors such as health, climate, and the economy.

Overall, Google’s support for UNECA and PARIS21 builds on existing collaborations to transform fragmented data into actionable insights. By strengthening data analysis capabilities and promoting regional cooperation, these efforts aim to help African nations build a digitally empowered, AI-ready future that supports long-term economic growth and inclusive development.
