Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) are preparing to discuss the safety of AI systems that may pose serious security risks. The session will examine how existing EU legislation, particularly the AI Act and the Cybersecurity Act, applies in practice and how companies are managing compliance with these frameworks.
The focus will be on advanced AI systems, their development, and the challenges of implementing EU rules when such technologies present potential risks. Experts from ENISA, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity, and the European Commission are expected to provide insights into how the legal and regulatory frameworks operate across the EU, including specific rules governing AI systems.
The discussion comes at a time when the European Commission has proposed changes to the Cybersecurity Act. While the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy is leading work on the file, IMCO is contributing an opinion that emphasizes internal market and consumer protection aspects.
This debate reflects the growing importance of ensuring that AI systems are not only innovative but also safe, secure, and aligned with EU legislation, as policymakers seek to balance technological progress with public trust and protection.
