AI EmpowerED by Global Skills Academy Now Available in Malaysia

Dated: March 11, 2026

UNESCO, in partnership with Microsoft Elevate, KPMG International, and Tablet Academy, is expanding its Digital and AI Skills Programme, AI EmpowerED, to Malaysia. The programme was recently launched at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), where 36 teachers from TVET institutions participated in a two-day onsite bootcamp. The training introduced educators to key areas where artificial intelligence is transforming teaching, after which participants received access to personalised learning accounts to further develop their digital and AI skills.

The increasing digitalization of TVET at UTHM highlights the need for quality training in AI and digital skills among educators. Integrating technology into the curriculum requires strong digital foundations, enabling teachers to effectively leverage AI in learning environments.

Following the launch, AI EmpowerED will adopt a train-the-trainer model to equip institutional leaders, educators, and staff with the knowledge and competencies needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy. The programme will expand to more institutions across Malaysia, training additional master trainers and introducing new online AI credentials for both staff and students throughout 2026.

Malaysia is experiencing rapid digital transformation, with AI and advanced technologies becoming integral to industries, public services, and businesses. The programme aims to ensure that AI serves as a meaningful tool in education rather than a superficial addition, empowering educators to unlock its full potential.

Building on successful pilots in Kenya, Ghana, and India in 2025, AI EmpowerED under UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy seeks to equip teachers and learners with practical AI skills relevant to education and the future of work. By December 2026, the initiative aims to train and credential more than 500,000 teachers and students, with future expansions planned for Uganda, Tanzania, and other partner countries.

This collaboration demonstrates the impact of public-private partnerships, combining expertise and resources to create tangible opportunities for young people while supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education.
