Expanding AI Learning Opportunities Across Africa: A Path to Innovation

Dated: March 18, 2026

Google DeepMind is expanding access to advanced AI education in Africa by launching additional courses of its AI Research Foundations curriculum. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity, offering the next generation of technical learners hands-on experience with generative AI models. Developed with experts from University College London, the courses allow learners to build and fine-tune language models from the ground up, and are freely available on Google Skills. Google.org is supporting the rollout by funding lecturer training and providing instructional toolkits for classrooms across the continent.

The curriculum goes beyond basic AI literacy, providing technical university students and community learners with an applied understanding of modern AI systems. Learners gain practical experience with generative language models and transformers while following responsible innovation principles. These skills prepare participants for careers in AI research, enabling them to leverage advanced AI to tackle significant societal challenges. The courses can be taken independently at a self-paced level or integrated into structured programs by educators at universities and non-governmental organizations.

Despite Africa being home to one in five people globally, the continent contributes only 1.8% of AI research worldwide. By localizing the curriculum in collaboration with African learners and experts from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the program incorporates real-world research use cases relevant to African contexts. While tailored for African communities, the courses remain freely accessible to learners worldwide, fostering broader global participation in AI education.

The curriculum is designed to scale through educators, with input from the African AI research community guiding its flexible structure to translate online concepts into effective in-person instruction. Google.org has provided $4 million in funding to the FATE Foundation to support this effort, partnering with AIMS to bring the program into African classrooms. Specialized lecturer toolkits and “train-the-trainer” programs will equip educators with the resources needed to deliver the curriculum confidently, helping to broaden participation in advanced AI education and empower African researchers to address local and global challenges responsibly.
