Lomé, May 26, 2026 – The use of generative AI tools in Togo continues to climb, reaching 10.1% of the population aged 15 to 64 in the first quarter of 2026, according to Microsoft’s Global AI Diffusion Q1 2026 Trends and Insights report. The figure marks steady growth from 9.3% in late 2025 and 8.7% earlier that year.
The report tracks adoption of platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot, using aggregated telemetry data adjusted for internet penetration and device connectivity. Microsoft attributes Togo’s rising usage to expanding mobile internet access, increasing smartphone ownership, and youth interest in AI‑powered writing, coding, and content creation.
Despite the upward trend, Togo remains in the middle tier of African AI adoption, alongside Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, and Niger. South Africa leads the continent with a 23.1% usage rate, followed by Namibia (15.1%), Gabon, and Libya (15%). Globally, the United Arab Emirates tops the list at 70.1%, ahead of Singapore (63.4%) and Norway (48.6%).
Microsoft’s analysis highlights a widening digital divide: developed economies average 27.5% AI usage, compared with 15.4% in the Global South. Persistent challenges such as limited electricity, weak connectivity, and digital skills shortages continue to slow adoption across parts of Africa.
Still, Togo’s steady progress signals growing momentum in the region’s digital transformation — a sign that generative AI is gradually becoming part of everyday life for its connected citizens.
