Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, reshaping education, governance, and disaster response, and Jamaica is ensuring its voice is heard in this global debate. Under the guidance of the UN and the Global Digital Compact, Jamaica is positioning itself as a leader among Small Island Developing States in ethical AI governance.
The country has already taken significant steps, including completing an AI Readiness Assessment facilitated by UNESCO, which informed the drafting of a National AI Policy. While Jamaica has strong legal frameworks like the Data Protection Act and Cybercrimes Act, challenges remain in research investment, infrastructure, and inclusivity. Despite these gaps, initiatives such as AI-powered education programmes for over 450,000 students and training for teachers and media professionals highlight Jamaica’s proactive approach.
Youth engagement is central to this vision. Programmes like UNICEF’s AI-powered Learning Passport and accessible digital textbooks show how technology can empower the next generation, ensuring innovation is inclusive and sustainable.
Ultimately, Jamaica’s stance emphasizes that governance is not a barrier to innovation but its foundation. By prioritizing ethics, trust, and inclusivity, Jamaica is helping shape AI for humanity, ensuring that even smaller nations play a decisive role in defining the digital future.
