UK Backs Company Developing AI That Can Discover New Knowledge

Dated: April 28, 2026

The UK government, through its Sovereign AI initiative, is backing Ineffable Intelligence in partnership with the British Business Bank to scale a British-built AI company focused on developing systems that can learn independently and generate new knowledge. Unlike traditional AI models that rely on existing datasets, Ineffable is building “self-learning” algorithms designed to interact with environments, test ideas, and discover novel insights, with the aim of driving breakthroughs across science, medicine, and engineering.

The company is founded by AI pioneer David Silver, a leading researcher known for major advances in reinforcement learning and his role in developing systems such as AlphaGo. His latest venture aims to push AI beyond imitation toward systems capable of producing original knowledge, marking a new frontier in artificial intelligence development.

Sovereign AI and the British Business Bank will co-invest to support Ineffable’s growth, helping it scale its research, expand its team, and develop its technology within the UK. The Sovereign AI Fund is designed to act with venture capital-style speed while leveraging state backing to support high-potential AI startups and ensure they can compete globally from a UK base.

UK ministers highlighted the investment as part of a broader strategy to position the country as a global leader in artificial intelligence. Officials said the initiative aims to ensure the UK is not just adopting AI technologies but actively building them, supporting homegrown innovation with strong national backing.

Industry leaders involved in the programme emphasized that Ineffable Intelligence represents a potential shift in AI capabilities, with the ability to transform multiple sectors through systems that can generate new scientific and technological insights. They also noted that keeping such frontier companies based in the UK is central to long-term innovation and economic strength.

The announcement adds to a growing portfolio of companies supported by the Sovereign AI Fund since its recent launch, including startups working on AI infrastructure and research tools. Several additional companies are also being given access to national supercomputing resources to support advanced AI model development and research.
