IOM and Republic of Korea Launch Global AI Hub for Human-Centred Innovation

Dated: May 22, 2026

Geneva/Seoul, 21 May 2026 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has joined the Government of the Republic of Korea and United Nations partners to launch a new Global AI Hub in Seoul, reaffirming its commitment to advancing responsible and human-centred artificial intelligence under the shared vision, “AI for All, AI to Solve Global Challenges.”

The initiative aims to harness AI’s potential to address pressing global issues — from health and climate change to migration, food security, and humanitarian response — by enabling governments and international organizations to respond more effectively to evolving challenges.

Speaking at the Vision Declaration Ceremony, IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasized that artificial intelligence can transform how vulnerable communities are protected. “By working together, we can better use data to anticipate risks, prevent crises from escalating, and support more informed decision-making,” she said.

Hosted by the Republic of Korea, the Global AI Hub will unite nine UN agencies and related entities around shared infrastructure, expertise, and innovation. The platform will serve as a collaborative space for advancing AI governance, standards, safety, and accountability, while supporting the development of practical AI tools to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Hub will also enable participating organizations to design and scale AI applications through shared engineering capacity, data resources, and responsible AI practices. This milestone builds on the Letter of Intent signed in Geneva in March 2026 and marks continued progress toward full operational readiness by 2027.

By fostering international cooperation and ethical innovation, the Global AI Hub represents a major step toward ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence are distributed equitably — empowering nations and communities most in need.
