UN Begins Global AI Impact Study Focused on People

Dated: April 13, 2026

The United Nations has launched an independent international scientific panel on artificial intelligence to study its global impact and ensure that human values remain central to technological development. Comprising 40 experts from diverse fields, the panel has been tasked with examining how AI is transforming modern life while addressing the ethical and societal challenges associated with its rapid growth.

The panel brings together specialists from academia, industry, civil society, and government, reflecting a wide range of expertise in AI technology, policy, and ethics. Members, including researchers like Menna El-Assady, emphasize the importance of maintaining human involvement in AI-driven decisions, ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces human judgment.

A key focus of the study is the concept of “augmented intelligence,” which promotes collaboration between humans and AI systems. The panel aims to better understand how AI interacts with human decision-making processes and how it can be applied across sectors such as healthcare and the labor market without undermining human agency.

The initiative also addresses concerns about trust, transparency, and ethical risks in AI development. Issues such as bias, lack of regulation, and the need for accountability are central to the panel’s work, alongside proposed solutions like AI watermarking to distinguish between human-created and machine-generated content.

Overall, the panel’s work represents a significant step toward shaping global AI governance. Its findings, expected to be presented at an upcoming international dialogue, are intended to guide policies that balance innovation with responsibility, ensuring that AI development remains inclusive, ethical, and beneficial for society.
